Alfie Plant becomes the fans favourite during a thrilling 1st Round at #TheOpen.

England’s Alfie Plant walked on to the 1st tee at Royal Birkdale this morning to a rapturous welcome from his army of supporters #TeamAlfie.

Alfie wasn’t phased by any 1st tee nerves, he hit a solid 3 Wood down the middle of the fairway to the delight of his fans.  What followed was quite amazing, Alfie hit a mid-iron into 4 feet and holed the putt for birdie to tie the lead! The cheers from #TeamAlfie could be heard all the way back to the clubhouse.

Alfie’s performance today was something to be proud of, during his opening 12 holes in testing conditions he didn’t miss a shot, he looked completely at home amongst the world’s best players.

Alfie was -1 playing the 13th hole, he made an unfortunate 3 putt bogey and then double bogied the Par 3 14th to go to +2 for the tournament.  Any lesser player making their debut could’ve easily unravelled, but Alfie dug in and finished his remaining 4 holes in one under par to shoot 71 (+1).

Alfie shot the low round of the day amongst his fellow Amateur’s competing for the Silver Medal:

Alfie Plant +1, Conner Syme +3, Luca Cianchetti +5, Harry Ellis +5, Maverick McNealy +8.

The most impressive thing about today was how well Alfie handled himself, he was tied for the lead during the early stages of in his round, he didn’t let the occasion get to him, he kept his focus and performed brilliantly.

The spectators out on the course were blown away by the amount of support Alfie had, the legendary #TeamAlfie were out in force to cheer Alfie on from start to finish.  The casual fans wanted to join in with #TeamAlfie there was a feel good factor and an atmosphere out on the course that i’d never seen before generated by an Amateur player.

Alfie has quickly become the fan’s favourite this week, his likeable personality and excellent golf game has won him a huge following.  After completing his round, Alfie came into the Links Pavilion to meet with family and friends, he also made time to talk to many of the fans about his opening round.

If tomorrow is half as enjoyable as today, the fans are in for another treat! #TeamAlfie
